So when you set out to start a blog one of the most important things about those beginning steps is the name that you are going to give it. Everyone wants a name that relates to themselves and their lives or one that is catchy and funny. So why did I, the Irish Wench choose the name “To See the World in a Grain of Sand”?
Many years ago, never mind how many (after all its not good to ask a wench her age) I was reading a literature book and in it was a quote by William Blake. That quote lead me to search for his literature that had the rest of the writing that went with the quote. Of course in those days, every home didn’t have internet and computers in every room, in fact the only internet available was dial up and trust me even the slowest DSL is faster than dial up was! So in search of more of William Blake’s writings I found myself headed to the library where I found the “Auguries of Innocence” by William Blake.
The first paragraph states as follows:
”To see the world in a grain of sand,
And a heaven in a wild flower,
Hold infinity in the palm of your hand,
And eternity in an hour.”
Shall we think about what that means line by line? Well I am sure that it can mean several different things to many people, but here is what it means to me.
Line One: To see the world in a grain of sand
Everyone in the entire world in their own way are looking for ways to make their life better to get out there and redefine themselves or explore and enjoy the world; however, Blake through this simple line is trying to get us to see the world in a grain of sand, and not just any world…our world.
Think of a grain of sand and how tiny it is…..can you find a world in it? I can, when I think of this line I think of how large and infinite our universe is, how tiny we are all in such a place, but at the same time the coasts of the world are made up of grains of sand….every beach would be less than what it is without each grain, and so the world would be less then it is without each and everyone in it, doing their part, making their mark, making their ripple in the pond. Your part might seem as small as a piece of sand but the important thing to realize is that your part in the world matters to someone.
Line Two: “And Heaven in a Wild Flower”
I love this line, so simple and perfect. A wild flower growing in a field, doesn’t cost you anything to pick it and enjoy its scent and colors, such a small thing in this crazy, busy world we live in. When everyone wants bigger and better and more, what so many of us forget is that life is made up of just little things, little moments. Think of some of your favorite memories….how many of them were just little things that happened that turned into being so wonderful and memorable? I met my husband through such a little moment that was unexpected and not planned and that has turned out to be more than I ever thought it could be. Never take the little things or moments for granted, you will see they are the ones that make up your world.
Line Three: “Hold infinity in the palm of your hand”
Why are humans so obsessed with time? It is because its the one thing we can control or buy, but with our hands, our actions, our little moments we can create timeless events. Something you do or say today could end up becoming the ripple that starts the change that changes something forever, and in the moment it took you to say or do that small deed you were holding infinity in your hand. We all have the power right in our hand to change so much for so many and most likely just through doing something small.
Line Four: “And eternity in an hour”
Ever have a moment that lasts forever and one that you replay in your mind constantly because in that moment everything was perfect, more than you dreamed and one of those things that changed everything in your life? This line points out that even though something lasts only a short time, for us it could be everything, that hour is where we could find our eternity, the place and person we were always met to be.
So a short recap, we are one of many in a big world, pay attention to the little moments and things that make up your life, realize that we all hold the power to make a difference and relish in those moments that turn into eternity for they are few and far between.
That is what this quote means to me and it is because of that reason that I chose that for the title of my blog. I love relishing in all the little moments that become the most memorable and how little acts of kindness can change so much.
I am sure there are a lot of people that this quote speaks differently to and that’s the beauty of poetry it all speaks to us in certain ways and maybe this one spoke to you differently, but regardless it will have you thinking about all the little things in life that make it all worth while. So get up, get out there, make your memories, relish in the little things, make a difference, it doesn’t matter how small it seems, because I promise you it matters to someone else more than you know and remember that our time here is short, we can’t control time but we can control what we do with it. Kiss your husband more, watch those babies a little closer because they are growing up faster than you want to admit and don’t forget to take time to stop and smell the flowers, you might just find your world in one……until later…….
